Gender Diversity in Cybersecurity is headed in the right direction.

Cybersecurity is a critical field that is becoming increasingly important as technology becomes more prevalent in our daily lives. However, we at Stack see a notable gap in the representation of women in the cybersecurity workforce. Despite making up half of the global population, women currently hold only 25 percent of cybersecurity jobs worldwide, and the number is even lower for leadership positions.

According to a recent study, which also provides a very helpful and detailed report on the subject, the number of women in cybersecurity is projected to increase over the next few years. By 2025, it is predicted that women will make up 30 percent of the global cybersecurity workforce. This is a significant increase from the 20 percent representation in 2019 and the 10 percent representation in 2013.

This growth in the representation of women in cybersecurity is not limited to just securing corporate networks. It includes other areas such as IoT, IIoT, and ICS security, as well as cybersecurity for medical, automotive, aviation, military defence, and other industries.

However, while the representation of women in cybersecurity is increasing, the gender gap remains significant in leadership positions. For example, only 17 percent of chief information security officer (CISO) roles at Fortune 500 companies are held by women. This disparity is concerning as it is important to have diversity in leadership positions in order to make well-rounded decisions. But as this report highlights the top female leaders, the potential for a more diverse leadership is high.

The underrepresentation of women in cybersecurity is a complex issue with no single solution. However, there are a few things that can be done to help bridge the gap. One solution is to encourage more girls and young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This can be done through education and mentorship programs that provide girls with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in these fields.

Another solution is to create a more inclusive work environment for women in cybersecurity. This includes promoting policies such as flexible work arrangements and parental leave, as well as providing opportunities for professional development and career advancement.

At Stack, we believe that it is important to increase visibility of women in cybersecurity. We do this by highlighting the achievements of women in the field and by providing role models for girls and young women to look up to.
